Cupping

What is Cupping Therapy?
Cupping therapy is a traditional therapeutic technique used to support muscle tension, circulation, pain relief, recovery, and overall relaxation. It involves placing specialized cups on the skin to create gentle suction, which helps lift the tissue, increase local blood flow, and release areas of tightness or restriction.
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, cupping helps move Qi and blood, especially in areas where there may be stagnation, tension, pain, or heaviness. When circulation is restricted or tissues are not moving well, the body can feel tight, achy, stiff, or stuck. Cupping helps encourage movement in those areas.
From a modern biomedical perspective, cupping may help increase circulation, reduce muscle tension, improve tissue mobility, support lymphatic flow, and calm the nervous system. It can be especially helpful when muscles feel tight, sore, overworked, or slow to recover.
What makes cupping unique is that it works by lifting the tissue rather than pressing down on it. This can create a different type of release compared to massage or manual therapy and may be especially helpful for people who hold tension deeply in their muscles.
Is Cupping Right For You?
Cupping therapy may be beneficial for individuals experiencing:
Neck and shoulder tension
Upper back tightness
Low back pain or stiffness
Muscle soreness or tightness
Sports-related tension or recovery support
Repetitive strain injuries
Headaches related to muscle tension
Restricted mobility or stiffness
Poor circulation in certain areas
Stress-related muscle tension
Jaw, neck, or upper trap tightness
General body aches and heaviness
Recovery from training or physical activity
Many people seek cupping because they feel tight, tense, or restricted, even after stretching or massage. It can be a helpful therapy when the body needs support with circulation, tissue release, and relaxation.
Cupping can be used on its own or as part of a broader treatment plan that may include acupuncture, manual therapy, movement therapy, stretching, rehabilitation exercises, lifestyle support, or naturopathic recommendations.
What Can You Expect From Your Cupping Session?
Before your cupping session, your practitioner will begin with an assessment to understand your symptoms, areas of tension, pain patterns, health history, activity level, and treatment goals. This helps determine where cupping may be most helpful and whether it is appropriate for your body that day.
During treatment, cups are placed on specific areas of the body, often over muscles that feel tight, sore, restricted, or painful. Gentle suction is created to lift the skin and underlying tissue. Depending on your needs, the cups may stay in one place for a period of time, or your practitioner may use moving cupping, where the cups glide along the muscles to encourage tissue release and circulation.
You may feel a pulling, stretching, or pressure-like sensation under the cups. Most people find this feeling tolerable and many describe it as relieving, especially in areas where they hold chronic tension.
Cupping sessions can be tailored depending on your comfort level. The intensity of suction can be adjusted, and your practitioner will check in with you throughout the treatment to make sure the pressure feels therapeutic rather than overwhelming.
After cupping, many patients feel looser, lighter, and more relaxed. Some notice improved mobility, reduced muscle tightness, or a sense of release in areas that previously felt stuck.
Our Naturopathic Approach to Cupping
Our approach to cupping goes beyond simply placing cups where the pain is. We look at why your body may be holding tension in the first place.
For muscle pain and tightness, we may consider posture, movement patterns, training habits, repetitive strain, stress, sleep, hydration, inflammation, and recovery.
For headaches or neck tension, we may look at jaw clenching, upper trap tightness, stress load, screen posture, breathing patterns, and nervous system activation.
For athletic recovery, we may consider circulation, mobility, muscle fatigue, overtraining, and whether your body is getting the support it needs to repair.
For stress-related tension, cupping can be used as part of a calming treatment plan to help the body shift out of a guarded, tense state and into a more relaxed state.
This is where cupping fits beautifully into naturopathic care. It is not only about temporary relief, it is about understanding the patterns that are contributing to pain, tightness, and restricted movement so we can support your body more effectively over time.
Cupping Marks: What Are They?
One of the most common things people notice after cupping is temporary circular marks on the skin. These marks are a normal response to the suction and increased blood flow in the area.
The colour of the marks can vary from light pink to dark purple depending on the level of tissue tension, circulation, and how your body responds to treatment. They are not usually painful and typically fade within a few days to one week, although this can vary from person to person.
Not everyone will get dark marks, and darker marks do not necessarily mean the treatment was better. The goal is always to use the right amount of suction for your body, your comfort level, and your treatment goals.
Aftercare and Follow-Up
After cupping, it is normal to feel relaxed, lighter, or slightly sore, similar to how you may feel after a deep tissue massage. Temporary tenderness, warmth, or circular marks may occur and usually resolve on their own.
To support your recovery, we recommend drinking water, keeping the treated area warm, and avoiding intense exercise, sauna, cold exposure, or alcohol immediately after your session. Your practitioner may also recommend stretches, mobility work, breathing exercises, or lifestyle strategies to help maintain the benefits of treatment.
The number of sessions needed depends on your symptoms, how long they have been present, your activity level, and your overall goals. Some people feel relief after one session, while chronic or recurring tension often benefits from consistent care.
