Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a therapeutic treatment rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine and used today as part of an integrative, evidence-informed approach to health care. It involves the gentle insertion of very thin, sterile, single-use needles into specific points on the body to support pain relief, muscle relaxation, circulation, nervous system regulation, and overall healing.
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, acupuncture works by supporting the movement of Qi, the bodys vital energy, through specific meridian pathways. When there is stagnation, deficiency, tension, or imbalance in the body, symptoms can begin to show up as pain, tightness, fatigue, stress, digestive changes, hormonal concerns, or a general sense of feeling off.
From a modern biomedical perspective, acupuncture may influence the nervous system, muscles, connective tissue, blood flow, inflammatory pathways, and the bodys natural pain-relieving mechanisms. This is why acupuncture can be such a valuable tool for both physical pain and whole-body regulation.
What makes acupuncture unique is that we are not only looking at where the symptom is showing up. We are also asking why it may be happening in the first place. Your body and organ systems are all connected, and your treatment should reflect that.

Many people come to acupuncture for pain, but they often notice other shifts as well, feeling calmer, sleeping better, breathing deeper, or feeling more connected to their body again.
Acupuncture can be used on its own or as part of a broader naturopathic care plan that may include nutrition, lifestyle support, movement therapy, cupping, supplementation, stress support, or other individualized recommendations.
What Can You Expect From Your Acupuncture Session?
Before your acupuncture treatment, we begin with a detailed assessment. This is where we take the time to understand your symptoms, health history, lifestyle, stress levels, sleep, digestion, menstrual cycle if applicable, pain patterns, and overall health goals.
This part matters because acupuncture is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. Two people may come in with the same symptom, for example, headaches or low back pain, but the underlying pattern may be completely different. Your treatment is tailored to you.
During the session, very thin needles are gently placed into selected acupuncture points. Most patients describe the sensation as mild and very tolerable. You may feel a small pinch, dull ache, heaviness, warmth, tingling, or a sense of release around certain points. These sensations are usually temporary and are often part of the therapeutic response.
Once the needles are in place, you will rest comfortably while your body responds to the treatment. Many patients find this part deeply calming, almost like their nervous system finally has permission to slow down.
Depending on your treatment goals, your session may also include additional therapies such as cupping, gua sha, electroacupuncture, heat therapy, breathing techniques, lifestyle guidance, or movement-based recommendations.
Our Naturopathic Approach to Acupuncture
Our approach to acupuncture is both traditional and modern. We respect the foundations of Traditional Chinese Medicine while also integrating a strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, pain science, stress physiology, hormones, digestion, and nervous system health. We look at the bigger picture.
For pain and injuries, we may consider muscle tension, posture, joint mechanics, movement patterns, inflammation, and recovery capacity.
For stress and sleep concerns, we look at how your nervous system is functioning and whether your body is stuck in a state of constant activation.
For hormonal or menstrual concerns, we may look at cycle patterns, PMS symptoms, cramps, stress, digestion, blood flow, and overall endocrine balance.
For fertility support, acupuncture may be used as part of a broader plan to support circulation, stress regulation, cycle health, and overall reproductive wellness.
The goal is to help your body move out of survival mode and into a state where healing, regulation, and repair can happen more effectively.
Aftercare and Follow-Up
After acupuncture, it is common to feel relaxed, sleepy, calm, or sometimes more energized. Mild soreness, tenderness, or light bruising at the needle sites can occasionally occur and usually resolves quickly.
To support the effects of your treatment, we recommend drinking water, avoiding intense exercise immediately after your session, and giving your body time to integrate the treatment. Your practitioner may also recommend stretches, breathing exercises, movement therapy, nutrition support, or lifestyle strategies depending on your individual needs.
The number of sessions needed depends on your concern, how long it has been present, your overall health, and your goals. Acute concerns may improve more quickly, while chronic or complex concerns often benefit from a series of treatments.
Acupuncture works best when it is part of a consistent, personalized plan, not just a temporary fix, but a way to help your body function better over time.
